Summertime is here! June has been a busy month! I traveled with hubby for work, finished my 27th year in education, vacationed in Miami, and did LOTS & LOTS of writing.

Miami was so much fun. Great food, wonderful friends, and sun, sand, & the ocean! I did notice when creating this photo dump that I didn’t take many pics. We also took a trip to wine country I have no proof of.

July starts with a bang… trip to Austin with my daughter!

Sun, sand, and water… the perfect combination to soothe the soul! I don’t know what it is about this, but for me, it’s magic. Whatever stresses, worries, etc… I have, melt away when I’m at the beach.

Do you love a best friend’s brother trope, with a dash of jealousy, and a healthy dose of grump/sunshine? If so, keep your eyes peeled for Resisting Her! Damian & Cici’s love story is coming your way later this year! It’s the longest book of both my series so far and I haven’t hit ‘the end’ yet… I still have to go back and clean up, so we’ll see how it goes.

❤️ I’m Back! ❤️ I’ve only posted sporadically this month because it has been a jam packed 7 weeks! And since I have been inconsistent with posting, AND I’ve had so many new readers, I thought I would introduce myself!

Hi, I’m Tori! I’m a Mexican-American romance author who writes real, honest, heartfelt love stories— with just the right touch of spice, steam, and of course angst. And don’t forget the guaranteed HEA!

Things about me:
1. I am adult diagnosed ADHD person. Who knew all those ‘hobbies’ I started and never finished was my crazy brain getting bored!
2. I LOVE to travel. When people say they hate airports, I cringe. How can you dislike a place filled with so many stories?
3. I’m a Gen Xer, counselor, & empath, which makes for a crazy combination. A mix of I know how you feel, sprinkled in reality therapy, with a dose of ‘are you kidding right now’.
4. The world feels heavy right now. Fear and worry are my constant companions. Living in fictional worlds whether I’m writing or reading helps.

Want to know what has kept me busy?? The end of the school year is always chaotic, but mix in: 1st week of May-the reconstruction of our home done and unpacking the whole 1st floor from storage begins, 2nd week- move kid back home from college with ALL HER STUFF mixed in with all the unpacked boxes, end of year activities (spirit days, award ceremonies, girls days, etc…), all the reports due, traveling to a book signing and a relay marathon, traveling for my husband’s job, and then my contract ends and we head on down to vacation! It’s been a whirlwind 7 weeks!

Now I’m on summer break! 5 weeks to rest, recharge, and get ready for another school year!

🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️ An authors life away from the keyboard 💻 A busy weekend!! From a book signing to jogging in a marathon relay! I loved every second of this past weekend. Some of my cousins had the bright idea to run Beach to Bay 10 years ago. Year 3, they asked me to join because someone dropped out… and the rest is history. I’ve participated in 6 Beach to Bays. COVID shut it down for a couple of years.

We run every year for my cousin Wanda who suffered a traumatic brain injury. She is an amazing person who is beautiful inside and out. Energetic, kind, funny, eyes that sparkled when she smiled which was often. She was moving up in the basketball referee ranks, from high school to collegiate. One unfortunate accident took so much away.

Our 1 team running group has grown over the years to include not only family, but close friends as well. This year we had 4 teams running!

📚 Book Fair and Signing Photo Dump🖊 Last Thursday I attended my very first book signing as an author. It was a mix of so many feelings before, during, & after. But now that it’s over and I’ve had time to process the evening, the emotion I feel the most is gratitude. Many say that writing is a solo job, and while the “work” of it is, there are so many people in the background that are supporting you. This event reminded of that.

I felt extremely loved and honored that so many of my family members came to support me: My husband and daughter who drove to the small town I grew up in to help me set up and help with the nerves. My cousin Anna, who called me to let me know about this event and encouraged me to sign up. To my Tia Vilma and cousin Mario who came out to say hello and cheer me on. And yes, my aunt has bought and read all my books. 🙈😉😂 To my sister friends, Susan & Steph, who decided to take a road trip to this speck on the map town just to be there for me. To my sister who couldn’t make it but was sending encouraging texts and good lucks.🍀 To my dad who keeps pestering me (in the most supportive way) if I’m still writing. 😆 To Erika for coming out to support me and hype me up! She is from my home town and happened to read my book, then become an IG friend, then to find out we were related! That’s what happens when you’re from a small town! 😂

I’ve read posts of authors venting about the lack of support from their family and friends. I feel for those authors, and it makes me extremely grateful mine are firmly in my corner.

And now, to the event. It was such an amazing event and opportunity for me. First, I was honored by Congressman Henry Cuellar and received a Congressional Certificate of Recognition. I met many amazing authors of all genres. The organizers of the event put so much thought and time into the event, it was truly beautiful. It was a way to uplift voices from a tiny Texas town. I had no idea there were so many people who have published from my home town. I was able to experience a signing that didn’t overwhelm me and I was able to learn. I’m so happy I decided to attend!

On the road again… Back to Oklahoma to pack up my daughter to come home for the summer! How is it that a whole school year has passed us by?!?! But I made it! I survived my daughter’s first year in college. I’m going to admit there were many sleepless nights in the beginning always wondering if she was safe. Missing her around the house. But as time went by, it became our new normal.

I’m going to be doing my VERY FIRST BOOK SIGNING!!! I’m so excited and nervous. This is a book fair & signing for Hebbronville authors or authors who have written about our small hometown. Some of my nerves are coming from the fact that I will be the ONLY ROMANCE author in attendance. There are many history, historical fiction, poets, and non-fiction authors. I’m nervous about my ‘man covers’ displayed on my table.🔥 LOL. But women love romance right?!?! 😉

ALL MY SOUTH TEXAS GALS, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU HERE!!

Did you know that I’m originally a small town girl? That’s right. I spent my formative years in a town where everyone knew each other. It was a treat when we went to the “city”, Laredo or Corpus Christi. My town did not have and still does not have a mall, movies, or bowling alley. We spent or time “cruising” up and down the main highway of the town. Yes, I was driving on my own with friends in the car at 12 years old.

From small town to city… I think I could thrive in either. And don’t ask me which I prefer because my answer is sure to change on the time of year, week, or mood.

📝What is my Writing Style📝 Plotter or pantser or a little of both?? I heavily lean towards Pantser. That’s not saying that I go into a story completely blind, because I have some sense of the story. I usually have “big” scenes that happen beginning, middle and end. Then I just jump in and see where the characters take me.

Is it a little stressful? Sometimes. Especially when the characters take a left turn unexpectedly. Or a right. Or they go straight when they were supposed to take a left. You get the picture. 🤣

Does the story stay true to my original vision? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The story as a whole will always have the feeling I had when it originally came to mind, but the way they got to the HEA sometimes is a little different.

Take Damian & Cici’s story… This weekend I spent time writing a scene that I didn’t envision and replaced one that I had thought was going in. As the characters evolve and become who they are, they take over and the dialogue and scenes follow them.

Why yes, yes I did! 🤣 This weekend we were visiting my daughter in Oklahoma and taking her grocery shopping, when I saw this Cheerios box. Alex immediately came to mind. I stopped to pull out my Kindle, and my daughter turned around and asked, “Are you coming?” I, of course, said, “Hold on. I gotta take a picture.” The inevitable eye roll followed as she waited on me to snap my pic.

🌧🧊What’s your mindset? 🧊🌧Are you a half empty or a half full kind of thinker? Springtime in Texas can be beautiful, but it can also be catastrophic. That was last Monday for us. The weather was beautiful, but in the course of about an hour of me arriving home after work, a rain cell came through and we were inundated with hail for about 15 minutes.

Now, I’m going to admit that I’m the half empty, dooms day thinker. I worry, then worry some more. I make myself anxious over things that haven’t happened, that I can very clearly see COULD happen. My mind will create every ‘bad’ scenario and see so many roadblocks.

“Cognitive distortions are inaccurate or irrational thought patterns that can lead to negative emotions and behaviors. They are common in mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.” This is me. I was at a counselor Self-Care training in December and had an a-ha moment. The presenter discussed this mindset and instantly knew it was me. There was no denying it. She then discussed cognitive reappraisal, which is an emotion regulation strategy where you reframe or reinterpret a situation to change its emotional impact.

It was cozy, the coffee was great and service was wonderful. And the cherry on top??? A little library filled with books!! I can’t wait to go back and drop off a book (or couple) of mine.😉

Big or small, AI is affecting all creators. Our work is being used to help a trillion dollar company make more profits. These big companies are forgoing legal and ethical standards for greed. Plain and simple. They wanted to spend the least amount as possible and wanted the works as fast as possible.

The engineers knew they were working in a severely grey area, but they did not seem to care. Court documents which were released unreacted show they admitted this in internal discussions. For these engineers, the humans behind these works were not important to them— ”and would have best context for what sort of appetite the org has for asking for forgiveness, not
permission”. It all comes down to POWER & GREED.

I searched the database and found 4 of my books on the site META used to train its AI model. The case is Kadrey et al. v. Meta Platforms. Yes, I saw one post about it this morning and I fell down the rabbit hole. Technology is advancing far quicker than the laws and regulations. We can’t trust that people will be ethical. Before our very eyes we see the destruction of anything standing in the way of power. The current state of the country has shown, power is a “high” that many people can not handle appropriately.

But all that starts to change when he begins to see Cici in a different light.

❤️ A Love Story~ 20 years ❤️ This year we celebrated in a cozy cabin in Hochatown, OK. Hubby got to fish while I spent time writing. I never would have thought I would “hike” with my laptop, but that’s what I did. Trekked behind hubby as he searched for a good fishing spot. Then I would find a cozy, shaded area and sit with my computer and start typing.

These are the things that love stories are made of. Finding a way to incorporate passions of two different people. Sharing a piece of our hobbies with the other. Just like hubby will stroll bookstores with me, I’ll hike with a laptop to sit with the serene nature sounds as my characters continue to tell their story.

🌸 Spring Break 🌸 I’m on the road…. Off to see the kid in OK. Fun fact, I had never been to OK in my life until we took my daughter to tour OU the summer before her senior year. And now, now it seems I’m there so very often. This is my 2nd trip in 2025!

We are spending a couple of days with the kid, then heading to a lake cabin for another couple of days to relax and recharge. ☺️

I’m currently working on Damian & Cici’s story. I had an alpha reader to go over what I have and there are some changes I need to make. Time line is tricky since I’m following the timeline of 2 other books. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I did this to myself (or more precisely, Damian did it to me!! He had to go and get smitten during their shared trauma.) and that story is stuck in my head. Now to unravel and weave again. 😉

I started a spreadsheet with the timeline of the other books and now I’m weaving Damian & Cici’s story in. By doing this I found a major mess up! 😆🤦🏻‍♀️ I introduced someone too early! Oops! My bad 😂I wonder who this person is?? Hmmm 🤔 Any guesses???
